Tea Cup Christmas Ornament Pattern - Crochet
I made these earlier in the year, for my first Christmas KAL/CAL Ornament with the "Christmas Group" on Ravelry.
Finally I've had a chance between projects, to write out the pattern so here it is...
These are tiny approx. 4cm tall, and made to hang on the
Christmas Tree.
I’ve made them roomy enough to hold a small round
chocolate (these are Strawberry Creams).
They are made with 8ply/DK and trimmed with gold yarn.
I used Moda Vera Romantic for the gold trim.
Crochet Hooks – 3.50mm for the cup and saucer
3.00mm for the cup
handle
Crochet terms are in English /Aus terminology - our dc = sc in American Crochet Terms.
Abbreviations -
dc2tog = hook through
next dc, yarn over, pull thread through, hook through 2nd dc, yarn over, pull
thread through, yarn over, and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
CUP
With 3.50mm hook and MC
Make a magic loop,
Round 1 - 1 ch, 8dc into loop, join to 1st dc with sl st. Pull tight to close circle and
secure.
Round 2 – 1ch (counts as dc), 1dc in
same place as sl st, 2dc in every dc, join with sl st to first ch – 16dc.
Round 3 – 1ch, 1dc in same place as sl st,1 dc in next dc, 2dc
in next dc, repeat from* ending with 1dc on last repeat, join with sl st to first ch – 24dc.
Rounds 4,5 & 6 – 1ch, 1 dc in every dc, join to first ch
– 24dc. Your cup will start to form
shape.
Round 7 – 1ch, *dc2tog over next 2 dc, dc in next dc, repeat
from * join with sl st to first ch – 16dc.
Round 8 – 1ch, dc in every dc, join with sl st to first ch –
16dc.
Round 9 – 1ch, dc in same place as sl st, *dc in next dc,
2dc in next dc, repeat from * join with
sl st to first ch – 24 dc. Change to gold at the end of this round, by joining
in before finishing the sl st and pull through the new colour on you hook.
Round 10 – dc in each
dc, join to first dc and fasten off.
SAUCER
Using 3.50m hook and MC
Work first 3 rounds of CUP,
Round 4 – 1ch, 1dc in same place as sl st, *1dc in next 2dc,
2dc in next dc, repeat from * around, join
Round 5 – 1ch, 1dc in same place as sl st, *1dc in next 3dc,
2dc in next dc, repeat from * join with
sl st, change to gold at the end of this round, by joining in before finishing
the sl st, pulling through the new colour on you hook – 40 dc.
Round 6 – With gold, dc in every dc around – join to first
dc, fasten off.
CUP HANDLE
For the handle, you’re going to do a row of ch in the cup
colour, then change to gold to do a row of dc.
Using 3mm hook
and cup colour, make 9ch, join in gold
THEN make the last ch, so you have gold on your hook ready for the next row.
Next Row - miss first ch, 1dc in next 4 ch, then 2dc in each of the next 5ch. Fasten
off
This makes the curve for the handle.
Sew the handle to the cup, then sew the cup to the saucer
around the base and attach a gold cord to hang.
All done......

OMG Jen, your artwork is amazing :) I cannot even sew !!!
ReplyDeleteFab little ornaments, Jen. You're so creative, I don't know where you get such great ideas from :o)
ReplyDeleteThanks LM2Cats that's so nice of you :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Pat xxoo
ReplyDeleteJen, as others have said you are so talented!!! These are fantastic, I would like to order some for next Christmas please ... perhaps 6...just let me know how much they would be first..lol...I mean too a "proper" price, not a "for you $$"...
ReplyDeleteKeep up your fantastic work, you truly are amazing!
Also nice to see you have a copyright on your pattern!
Karen
I have quite a few here Karen, so I'll bring some to Kallangur - sorry they will have to be that special family price because you are family to me :-)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness these are too adorable - thanks for sharing a pattern!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sue - never too early for Christmas stuff lol.
DeleteLove your cups and saucers,is there any chance of a knitting pattern for them please? cheers, Maz.
ReplyDeleteMaz, that would be a very tiny pattern knitted in the round, or with a seam on the cup and saucer. They would be a bit beyond my hands' abilities sorry.
Deletereally cute, they'll be on my tree this year, thanks. so true, never too early or too late for christmas stuff
ReplyDeleteThanks :-) Yes it's getting closer very quickly!
DeleteI was wondering whether it was single or double crotchet for the tea cups . I tried double and it didn't quite come out the same. Let me know. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi, it is our English/Australian dc, which if you're from the US is your sc. I always make note that it is in English/Aus terminolgy, in my patterns (it's just above the abbreviations), as it causes so much confusion with the different crochet terminologies :-) Jen xx
ReplyDeleteI am making these in hot pink for my daughters 5th birthday tea party. They will make prefect additions to the hats I'm going to make. What a cute pattern.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute idea! Hope the party is a huge success xx.
DeleteHi Justjen,
ReplyDeleteThankyou very much for this lovely little pattern ! It is delightful !
I've made one but find I have trouble with parts of it. At Round 2 of the Cup, it says 1ch (counts as dc) - does this just apply to this round or all the rounds ?
thanks
Yes it's counted as the first dc for each round.
DeleteI hope to try these soon. Love them!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carm, I'm thrilled you like them :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is the cutest thing! I made one immediately and blogged about it. Thanks for the pattern.

Thanks Val, just read it :-).I love your designs, especially all the cats :-)
DeleteBiggest Morning Tea coming up next month - will just have time to do one or two for prizes on the day
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful. I'd like to do them for my granddaughter's birthday in April. If I get started now, I may have a couple ready by then. Just wondering if it's possible to do the saucer first with working only into the front or back loop only on round 3, then continuing the saucer. With the saucer finished, to go back to row 3 nd and sc into the left over loop to make the cup. Then the cup would be attached with no sewing needed. Manya
